About the Position

The BRAC Ultra-Poor Graduation Initiative (UPGI) seeks to hire an Associate who will support a growing team of development professionals that advocate and provide advisory services around the Ultra-Poor Graduation approach to a variety of external clients, including UN agencies, governments, the World Bank, microfinance institutions, and NGOs. Working closely with the Managing Director’s office and the advocacy team, s/he will support administrative functions, logistics, events, and outreach, including communications and advocacy. This role offers the opportunity to work closely with leadership during a critical period of growth and development for the team.

This position will be based in Washington DC as part of a team that works with staff members across BRAC global operations in New York, London, Bangladesh, and other offices in Asia and Africa. 

Primary Responsibilities: 

The Associate, Ultra-Poor Graduation Initiative will be responsible for supporting administration and outreach for our global advocacy initiative. Responsibilities will include the following:


  • Assist in scheduling of calls, meetings, travel, and overall management of the Managing Director’s calendar.
  • Help manage agendas, minutes, and action items of calls and meetings - ensuring they are appropriately shared and executed.
  • Track contacts and relationships in cultivation and update databases, including Salesforce.
  • Assist with organisation of internal events including annual retreats, learning workshops and strategy meetings. 
  • Support communication of the Managing Director with internal stakeholders within wider organization by tracking and sharing regular updates. 
  • Additional administrative support e.g. processing expenses, ensuring room bookings, and maintaining database of contacts. 


Advocacy and Outreach:

  • Support and work closely with leadership on research of strategic partners and relevant fora for representing BRAC and the Graduation approach with global audiences.
  • Support Managing Director and team members to prepare for local conferences, events, and meetings when necessary or relevant.
  • Curate briefing documents for Managing Director ahead of key events, meetings, and conferences.
  • Work closely with the Special Assistant to track key trends, events, debates, and evidence relevant to the Graduation and extreme poverty reduction agenda to inform advocacy and business development and enhance strategic engagement.
  • Provide editorial backstopping including drafting, copy-editing, and formatting of documents, briefs, and presentations for conferences, key meetings and partner outreach, and events.



The candidate for Associate, Ultra-Poor Graduation Initiative should have a deep commitment toward international development and the eradication of extreme poverty; strengths in organization and administrative work; and some experience in advocacy, communications, and/or public outreach. 

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree, with a preference given to candidates with degrees in international development, policy, communications, or other relevant field.
  • A minimum of two years experience including background in administrative support functions and some level of communications or public outreach
  • Experience or knowledge of public policy, multilateral institutions, and/or global governance an advantage.


Knowledge and Skills:

  • Exceptional organizational skills, process orientation, with a keen eye for detail.
  • Highly self-motivated and strong ability to work independently and in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Proactive collaborator, with ability to effectively manage competing work streams and deadlines. 
  • Exceptional ability to communicate to partners and clients via written products and presentations. 
  • Diplomatic, with strong interpersonal skills, and a high degree of cultural sensitivity. 
  • Excellent writing skills in English required.

To date, BRAC has ‘graduated’ more than 1.7 million households out of ultra-poverty. BRAC’s approach has gained widespread recognition and adaptations have taken root worldwide.

In 2013, BRAC launched the Ultra-Poor Graduation Initiative. The Initiative aims to position Graduation as a key driver to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 1: End poverty in all its forms, everywhere. It does this by:

  • Advocating for uptake of the Graduation approach by policymakers, development finance agencies, national governments, Non-governmental organizations, and microfinance institutions.
  • Effective adaptation and implementation of the Graduation approach in countries around the world, supported through technical assistance, technical assistance and training for external stakeholders interested in, or currently implementing Graduation programs.
